Yale University Study Contradicts Popular Myth About Stress Relief!
An interesting experiment was conducted at Yale University in the 1990s to test the theory that exercise relieves stress. They used actors in their experiment. They divided them into 2 groups.
One was an Angry group and the other was a Calm group. The so-called Angry group made themselves angry and upset by imagining circumstances that made them feel angry. The other group was told to stay calm and peaceful. The researchers measured their vital statistics at that point: heart rate, blood pressure, and respiration.
Then both groups were given light exercises to do, including stair climbing. After they went through their physical exercises, their vital statistics were measured again. Then the researchers compared them to what they measured prior to exercise.
The findings surprised them:
1. The Angry group either stayed at the unhealthy levels they were at or their statistics ACTUALLY got worse after exercise.
2. The Calm group benefited from the exercise! These are the results that are usually attributed to the benefits of exercise as a stress reliever!
