There are 3 giant concussion myths that are keeping millions of people sick longer and maybe even forever. They can make symptoms worse too. Most of the research on concussions is pointed at understanding it, diagnosing it and also looking at the long-term effects of it.
The 3 giant concussion myths are still around since I first talked about them in 2014. They include:
1. Go to emergency after getting hit in the head.
2. Stay home and complete rest – both cognitive and physical.
3. You can’t speed up healing a concussion.
Today, the evidence is WORSE.
Watch the video.
A search in PubMed with just concussion found 4656 studies. I then narrowed it down below 300 studies when I added “treatment” to the search.
Ok. Not bad. But then I noticed that along with the search for concussion treatment, PubMed also looked for different words such as management. I groaned. Management of concussion symptoms is exactly what happens, which to me, doesn’t qualify as treatment. I found that ONLY 0.279% of all research about concussion is about treatment.
That’s why you’re in trouble.
The reason why people have any long term effects after a concussion is because there is NO prescribed comprehensive treatment. Telling people to go home and rest is NOT a treatment. Telling them to do nothing for days at a time is NOT a treatment.
And that’s why there are long term problems in people who don’t recover within the first few days or weeks after the initial concussion. There’s no question. The brain is just like anything else. Use it or lose it. The 3 giant concussion myths are causing huge problems for people who rely on conventional medicine. Remember what I said about conventional wisdom in a recent post? Researchers show that between 20 – 65% of people with a concussion have very prolonged symptoms. Many never recover fully. And doctors accept that, even if their patients don’t want that!
Please IGNORE conventional wisdom. It would be far better if you just got back into life as soon as possible, if slowly at first to try things out. Because it makes no sense for doctors to think that your concussion is the same as someone elses. They admit that each concussion is different but they don’t do things differently in each case. So 99% of doctors are going to tell you to go home and do nothing.
Watch Tina tell her story bravely and eloquently.
Are you happy and grateful that your own brain is in good condition and that you’re living life the way you want to? Because of the severe lack of treatment research on concussion, people have to try things on their own. People like Tina want to be healthy and productive again which is why she made the video.
