Psychological treatment for Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) has been strongly recommended by certain researchers but there is almost no conventional research being done. Until now. Calgary sports medicine doctor, Dr. Joanny Liu, says comprehensive solutions are needed now and that’s why she’s initiated a crowdfunding campaign to make it happen.

Calgary Sports Medicine doctor, Dr. Joanny Liu, is excited to conduct ground breaking state of the art research into psychological treatment for Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS). The proposed brain training will focus specifically on the issues that people have in PCS.

According to Nigel S. King, there is evidence for involvement in psychological processes during PCS. He observed six important elements, including: “(1) there is worse outcome where there is pre-existing psychopathological disorder; (2) the best early predictors of persisting post-concussion symptoms are psychological factors; (3) there are high rates of comorbidity of anxiety and depression symptoms with post-concussion symptoms and many of these symptoms are identical; (4) stress exacerbates post-concussion syndrome; (5) there is a higher prevalence of post-concussion syndrome in women, which is in line with a higher prevalence of psychopathological presentations in women; (6) there is an association between severity of post-concussion symptoms or time off work after mild head injury and seeking compensation; it should be noted, however, that although twice as many patients seeking compensation have post-concussion symptoms compared with those who are not, few show significant improvement following settlement, even a year afterwards.”

He goes on to say what Dr. Joanny Liu has also observed, “The effectiveness of brief, early psychological intervention may predominantly stem from minimising the impact of unhelpful beliefs and behaviours surrounding the syndrome.” He concluded that, β€œIt is therefore essential that patients with persisting and disabling post-concussion symptoms receive individualised formulations of their particular problems.” This is precisely the aim of Dr. Joanny’s study. Because the circumstances of each person in the study will differ from another, the process for each subject will be personalized. The online brain training course will specifically address the stress that each person is experiencing and will help them to address the underlying causes of the stress.
