I had a chance to deal with anger and every other possible negative emotion last week. I certainly had a situation which could’ve resulted in me NOT getting what I really wanted. You see, my brothers were in town from Toronto. There was a trip that they definitely wanted to do and I really wanted it for them too. The trip down was great until we got within about 43 kilometers from the gates of Waterton Lakes National Park.

My SUV broke down! After driving hundreds of kilometres!

Life is ALWAYS going to throw curve balls at you. And you have to decide how you’ll deal with it. I was not far from the park’s gate. I could’ve capitulated and gave up. I could’ve cried, got mad, got crazy. But I didn’t.

Watch the video to find out what I did instead!

I always have to talk about these two sister concepts: Control and Responsibility

Control: What do you really have control over?
Responsibility: What are you really responsible for?
Lastly: There is ALWAYS another choice to make what you want become a reality!

You have control ONLY over your own thoughts, feelings, what you say, what you do, decisions you make, actions you take and the results you get. It’s the same for what you’re responsible for (unless you have kids – you are responsible to and for them!)

You have NO control over others and what they think, do, say, etc. You are NOT responsible for what they do, say, think, etc. You can’t control circumstances and events happening outside of you. Same thing for responsibility.

You can let things go just based on these two things and feel better.

But if you’re still angry, do this: make yourself sit and feel the intensity of your anger and allow it to run its course until it completely dissipates. You will calm down.

Acknowledge how you feel. Do not deny it, suppress it or repress it. Accept it but do something about it, always in a positive constructive way. ASAP. And the ideas WILL come. The people who can help you WILL come.

Remember, anger and frustration create stress and stress is bad for your brain and your body. If you don’t remember the effects, then go back to the last post.

You can be in positive and constructive control or be destructive and give up control which promotes and prolongs the suffering. You choose!

We cannot afford to wait for MDs to catch up! I have to become the advocate the activist doctor because no one else is ready to step in. With the tragic murder-suicide of McCann Utu Jr due to inept “management” of his Post Concussion Syndrome, it is paramount that we must do things differently. No more lives so needlessly lost!
