blow to the head - keep CALM

I’ve got news for you. A blow to the head does not an automatic injury make. You don’t have to panic when someone gets hit in the head on the soccer field or at the ice rink. I want common sense and good sense to prevail.  I want you to do things one tiny step at a time. So I have 10 little steps that you can take to monitor yourself or someone else. It will probably take between 10 – 15 minutes to assess someone.

Watch the video as I outline what to do:

I suffered a little from tonguetiedness! Oh well. Even though I had notes I still managed to fumble!! So I’ve put in the 10 steps here about what to do when it is obvious that a blow to the head has caused difficulty. I promised to give you those steps in the video, but you’ll need to watch it to get the explanation behind these steps.

  1. If you’re the adult, parent, coach the first rule is: STAY calm! Don’t assume the worst.
  2. Like in first aid, please give the person who received the blow to the head some room to breathe.
  3. Check their eyes for dilated pupils. I explain what that means in the video.
  4. Check for blurred (or double vision) by pulling out a credit card and observing how much difficulty they have reading it out loud to you.
  5. Tell them to sit out for the time being.
  6. If after a while, they actually express the desire to go out and play again, check their eyes again.
  7. Pull out a different card for them to read. Again observe how well they do this.
  8. Have them stand up. Observe how well they do that. If there’s difficulty, sit them down a bit longer.
  9. If they do well standing up, then have them walk a straight line (imaginary or real). Observe how well they do that.
  10. Decide if these activities demonstrate normalcy or not.

Use good judgement. We can diagnose a blow to the head on the field, at the ice rink.

People L O V E their sport. And often it is a part of their identity. It’s what makes them tick. Let’s be sensible and not be over protective. Because being too careful can do insurmountable harm, especially when it’s based on knee-jerk reactions rather than good sense over a blow to the head.

Be awesome!
