Brain plasticity can be triggered by your thoughts and your emotions. Then repeat and rinse.
So, the question is very simple: What kind of thoughts and emotions is the best mix for triggering brain plasticity that actually heals. The interesting fact for most of us is that we don’t actually do a lot of thinking during the day. We are creatures of habit.
All you have to do is stand back and observe yourself once in a while. Take for example, your usual morning routine. What do you do as soon as you get up? Head to the bathroom? What’s the first thing you do? What’s the second thing you do? The third? The fourth?
Get the picture. If you have a lot of habits, you are operating on auto-pilot. You go through the day like a robot. Except a robot doesn’t have emotions. But you do and those too, are programmed reactions.
Take for example, a client of mine who came to me for anger management. Let me say this first, when someone comes to me for help, I am not helping them to manage anything. We identify the issues and we deal with them, as partners in health. I learn what bugs you and we only talk about them once and then we look for positive solutions and work on them. It can be iterative, but that can depend on how resolved you are about dealing with issues once and for all.
So, while you’re working on resolutions, you are changing the way you perceive that problem or obstacle or challenge. You are changing the thoughts around it. You change how you feel about it.
As you continue to do all of these things differently, over and over – you gain CONTROL over yourself. As you gain control, you are becoming increasingly conscious about what you’re thinking, feeling and doing.
That, in a nutshell, is how you take control of your brain, to enact brain plasticity. First it begins with awareness, second, a decision. It’s about consciously changing your thinking patterns. You must interrupt those patterns and catch yourself when you slide backwards.
For my client, it was imperative that he get his anger under control. He was wary of doing harm to the people he loved. I believe the healing process had already started when he finally realized what his strong emotions might lead to. That was his first step to making important changes. He tried other things to get on the correct path. When he found out about me, he truly opened his mind to new possibilities.
That’s when brain plasticity really speeds up. Attitudinal changes will change the brain and any other part of an ailing body. In Classical Chinese Medicine, it’s ALL connected. Don’t kid yourself – it’s all true.
