The health benefits of knitting get touted every now and then. There are several studies about knitting and how it keeps people from ruminating on their problems.
Oh great. What this really means is that it keeps people in the same place where they were before they started knitting. They’re avoiding their problems by replacing them with a distraction.
For me, it’s much more important to seriously consider the problems that you’re ruminating on. But NOT just to ruminate or think about them. I want you to actually write them all down and with each one consider this:
- Do I really have control over this?
- Am I really responsible for this?
- If the answer is Yes to both questions 1 and 2, then what steps may I take to take care of this once and for all?
Yes, I actually want to see you taking action on your problems instead of ignoring them. You see, meditation won’t work unless you have more peace of mind. So I won’t tell you to meditate. You have to work on removing the reasons why you have the problems that you have.
So telling people about the health benefits of knitting is about as useful as drawing a hot bath, lighting nice candles and soaking away your problems. Its effects are temporary. What happens when you’re not knitting. These studies only look at what happens when you’re knitting. They don’t follow people around the rest of their lives and observe. That’s the problem with research like this.
They ask the wrong questions. No wonder modern psychology isn’t any closer to solving real problems! Nope. Let’s NOT settle for temporary relief. Read the article here to see what I mean about the health benefits of knitting.
Stress is the perpetrator of all disease, pain and injury. Modern research is finally catching up to Ancient Classical Chinese Medicine. But it’s going to take a VERY long time for them to figure out how to help you.
