Junior Seau will be remembered as a linebacker, who played his position with much unsurpassed passion in the National Football League (NFL). He was a 10-time All-Pro, selected 12 times to the Pro Bowl and named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team. He was recently elected posthumously to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last August, 2015.
Junior Seau would’ve turned 47 this past week on January 19. He committed suicide in May 2012. An autopsy revealed that his brain was ravaged by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
Why must this happen? I’m not saying that football did this to him. I’m not saying that the sport of football should be banned and that children and adults should be stopped from playing.
I think, actually I know, something can be done to keep the brain healthy throughout life.
Junior Seau is only the latest person who will be held up as an example why football should be banned, why parents and players alike should be afraid. There are already at least 2 young players who made it on the rosters of NFL teams who have decided to quit ahead of any injuries.
This is NO way to live. Being afraid.
We have all this great research in neuroscience, neuroplasticity and neuropsychology and yet it isn’t being used by mainstream MDs. Why? Because even though there is in fact a trend in modern medical research that there is a connection between your psychological health and your physical health, they don’t know how to apply all that expensive and thought provoking information. Their “health” paradigm continues to separate mind from body, even though, you are in fact, EXPERIENCING it every single day!
What happens when you see something or have a thought in your head? You more than not, like it, dislike it or are neutral about it. If you dislike it, you may be setting off a bunch of stress hormones and neurotransmitters that flood the brain and the body.
What happens if someone cuts you off in traffic? You may have an immediate negative reaction. Nowadays it is called Road Rage. It started with seeing something. In a nanosecond you decided you didn’t like it. As you immediately applied an emotion to it, you got angry, scared, whatever. That set off a bunch of chemical reactions and also physical reactions throughout your body.
Like your heart rate racing. Your blood pressure went up. You breathing may have been shorter. A whole bunch of things happened to you physically. This describes very simply and emphatically your mind-body connection.
You’re stressed. Stress weakens your body and that includes the brain. You are already causing injury to the brain if you continue to be stressed out day in and day out. Your body gets used to it, but only in a detrimental way!
Understanding this, you can also reverse the effects. Either make the brain stronger or rebuild it when it is wounded. We don’t have to have any more deaths like Junior Seau’s. Be proactive.
Stress is the perpetrator of all disease, pain and injury. Modern research is finally catching up to Ancient Classical Chinese Medicine. But it’s going to take a VERY long time for them to figure out how to help you. If you require hand holding, please come join us at www.destressingleadership.com on Friday January 29 2016.
