I was shopping at a jewelry kiosk at Costco last night. I’d already been to Costco just few hours earlier, buying a new camcorder. I stopped by the traveling jewelry store then and looked at what they had. I was looking for a pendant, made of pearl, to enhance my strings of pearls.
But I hadn’t actually planned to be shopping for that, so I didn’t have my pearls with me. The young sales person advised me that they’d be at Costco until Sunday. So there was still time. But later on that evening, I decided to do something uncharacteristic. I decided to go back with my pearls and look for the things I wanted.
As I was trying out each pendant with my jewelry I happened to overhear the lone sales lady helping another customer. The customer commented that she’d lost weight and of course, the sales lady was curious.
The woman told her that her weight loss was due to 4th stage cancer (serious). What she said next, was incredible.
When she received the diagnosis, she didn’t want the treatments of chemotherapy et al that the doctors were telling her she had to do. It obviously didn’t appeal to her. She felt endangered by all this intervention. She cried and refused and in her own words, she said, they kicked her out!
Then she went looking for other solutions. She went to an acupuncturist who was intimidated by the diagnosis and he told her that he couldn’t help her, to go back to the cancer centre, get chemo and whatever, come back and then he could help her with the side effects. She cried.
So she went back to the cancer centre and asked for the least harmful chemo treatment they had. They refused. She told me, even though they had the supplies on hand, they refused to help her. She said, for the third time, she cried.
Then she looked some more, seeking help. Eventually she ended up in the US where she was able to get the type of treatment she wanted. But as a student for their cause. She did what she could to save her own life.
Yesterday night, she looked radiant. Beautiful skin. Thick wavy hair. Shining eyes. She really was a picture of health. But you can tell her journey has changed her forever. She’s STILL here.
It took great courage to say, “NO” and find a way. Her illness was due to a broken spirit but she found it again. It’s called human desire, self love, fortitude, and will.
