Health Canada began to regulate so-called natural medicine/products in January, 2004. Since then the producers of natural remedies have had to put their products through the paces to certify their products. In many cases, it meant that very important products used by many customers were taken off the market to put them through regulatory requirements to prove safety and effectiveness.
That sounds good, on the surface, except that many of these products were saving lives and making a real difference in someone’s health Frankly, there is NOT A SINGLE DOCUMENTED case of a natural medicine causing death in this country.
Pharmaceuticals are approved but it seems strange that so many include in their “side effects” death or major organ failure, as well as, in the case of some anti-depressants, suicide. Why are these side effects considered so trivially? The death or suicide of a patient should be taken seriously, shouldn’t it?
The article, which I’ve included a link, is pretty balanced. The only funny thing is that it ends with an MD saying that “Biologically, there is absolutely no difference between a natural product and a drug, in terms of having an effect on a biological process”.
Oh really? That may be true for vitamins. That’s not true for pharmaceutical drugs.
