A Doctor of Chinese Medicine requires 3 or more years of rigorous education and training to learn the necessary skills to become one. On top of that they must also participate in hundreds if not thousands of hours of supervised clinical practice before they graduate. It is mandatory.

Chinese medicine isn’t fluffy. It’s serious business and the art of healing is truly serious business. If results are what you’re looking for that are timely, then this will work for you.A friend of mine, who suffered from an MVA, told me that her MD recommended physiotherapy for the injury. She had a neck injury – typical soft tissue. The physio worked on her with acupuncture for a YEAR before they decided that it worked.

One entire year.

Perhaps you’re used to the modern medical point of view that can’t tell you how long it’ll take before you get better. They’re VERY conservative in their estimates. For a sprained ankle, they’ll tell you 3 – 6 months. I say, it’ll take 10 treatments, which for my clients means, a matter of weeks or even just a few days. So 3 – 4 weeks maybe? Compared to 3 – 6 months and you still don’t feel quite confident about running on it?

You could be enjoying your life a whole lot faster and getting back into the game!

That’s the difference between someone who knows what they’re doing versus someone who just knows how to put needles in your body. The latter is JUST not good enough, is it? You want to be healthy again sooner rather than later, yes?

In Canada, public safety is drilled into the minds of students of engineering right from day 1. Public safety is the mandate of professional governing bodies, such as the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, of which I’m still a member. Everyone who applies for a license to practice gets checked out for a degree from a recognized engineering school. Some people are required to write technical exams and pass them, too.

Safety is also drilled into students of acupuncture and Chinese medicine here in Alberta. We understand how to insert needles around areas such as the lungs. There is a risk of pneumothorax, AKA collapsed lung, when you allow an unskilled and unaware therapist to work on you. They call it medical acupuncture. The thing is, it isn’t apparent where those risky acupuncture points are. But it is, to a highly trained and regulated acupuncturist.

You wouldn’t go to a draftsman to build your bridge. Seek out the help that you deserve.Understand that your choice for acupuncture isn’t to be taken lightly.

Next, I’ll discuss how to tell between a bonafide acupuncturist versus a charlatan.
